NEW ROYAL ADELAIDE HOSPITAL: FROM CHILE TO AUSTRALIA

Opening date: 7 September 2017.
Location: Adelaide, South Australia.
Use: Healthcare (single-patient suites with en-suite bathrooms; 40 operating theatres of 65 m² each). The building is technologically advanced, with a fleet of automated robotic vehicles to help move supplies, meals, and equipment around the hospital, and personalised electronics for patients. 175,000 m²

The Challenges of the NRAH

This project, led by Fleischmann's Operations Department, had expert adviser Mr Gabriel Soto on site, leading the delivery of integrated services for the Australian Ministry of Health.

The hospital was designed to achieve a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to equivalent hospitals. A cogeneration system uses waste heat from the power generators for the domestic hot water system. The building's orientation is optimized to minimize solar thermal loads, with ample daylight penetration to reduce artificial lighting requirements.

Project Experience

  • Our focus on this project was MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) engineering.

  • We took part in the engineering and design of the project ahead of its assembly in Australia

  • This project allowed us to benchmark our capabilities against other markets.

  • It also prompted us to look more closely at our global expansion.

  • We delivered the project directly to the Australian health service.
